Contemporary Home Design in Oahu: A Stunning Transformation

A Texas family ready to embrace the Hawaiian lifestyle hired Tall Builders to modernize their 1980s Oahu home with a contemporary renovation. Because the family lived out of town, all of the planning, designing and construction was communicated with the homeowners through online communication.

Our designers and builders spent over six months transforming a 40-year-old house from its dated style into a modern home. We chose contemporary home design ideas to create functional living spaces for the whole family. Avi, our lead project manager, discussed the process of this renovation and the challenges they faced.

The neighborhood was fantastic – upscale and private in East Oahu. You felt a sense of community but also had a lot of privacy. The house had good bones but was dated and needed a modern, contemporary design.

The house itself had some quirks, like strange outdoor stone flooring throughout. The home inspection revealed that the sewer line to the road needed to be replaced.

We started with the design and planning phase, which usually takes three months. Since the sewer line needed to be replaced, we started with the exterior work. This meant digging trenches across the yard to replace the old galvanized pipes with new plastic ones and connect them to the street.

The clients were concerned about privacy and security, so we chose quality materials and products. They also wanted sliding doors for easy entry to the outside.

This was a full-sized contemporary home renovation. We touched every room in the house, and our design team did an amazing job. Some of the biggest changes included creating a larger master bathroom and a spacious walk-in closet. The clients had a good budget for high-end finishes, which allowed us to achieve some stunning results.

The kitchen saw the biggest transformation. It was originally a closed-off, older-style kitchen. We opened it up to create an open-concept space that flows into the living room.

We worked with a custom carpenter to design and build the kitchen. This involved some structural work, including adding support beams and removing walls, all done with the help of an engineer.

The countertops are stunning slabs of Dekton. We also worked with a custom cabinet maker to create the kitchen cabinets and bathroom vanities. For a cohesive look, we used the same veneer material in both spaces.

The $8,000 bathtub in the master bedroom added a stunning focal point.

I enjoyed the powder room. The clients wanted a funky vibe, so we used a green cabinet and bold wallpaper to bring in a touch of Hawaiian design.

Working with out-of-town clients was both challenging and exciting. It gave us the opportunity to improve our communication skills and find new ways to deliver results. We relied heavily on emails, texts, and weekly updates with photos to keep them informed and involved in the process. We wanted to make them feel comfortable and confident in our work, even though they couldn’t be on-site.

Interestingly, the family’s situation has changed. The husband’s mother will move into this house, and the family has purchased an additional two-story house in the same neighborhood. We’re currently in the planning and design phase for this new project, which is expected to be even more extensive than the first house.

What Is Contemporary Home Design?

Contemporary home design means “of the current moment.” It’s a fluid style that reflects today’s evolving trends and tastes.

  • Focus on Simplicity: Contemporary home interior design features simple lines, minimal decoration, and clear, open areas.
  • Emphasis on Functionality: Focuses on people’s lives, featuring open spaces for entertaining and efficient storage options.
  • Use of Natural Light: Big windows and skylights are used to let in more natural light and make the space feel open and fresh.
  • Incorporation of Natural Materials: Natural materials like wood, stone, and leather are typically used.

Contemporary House Design Colour Palette

Contemporary home design in Hawaii often embraces a vibrant yet serene color palette that reflects the island’s natural beauty.

Neutrals:

  • Whites: Crisp white provides a clean, airy backdrop, perfect for reflecting the bright Hawaiian sunshine.
  • Soft Sands: Neutral tones like beige, taupe, and sand evoke the island’s beaches and create a warm and inviting atmosphere.

Accents of Color:

  • Ocean Hues: Turquoise, teal, and aqua bring the vibrant ocean into your home.
  • Tropical Greens: Emerald, lime, and sage green evoke the lush rainforest.
  • Sunset Tones: Coral, peach, and burnt orange capture the vibrant colors of a Hawaiian sunset.
  • Volcanic Tones: Deep browns and blacks add a touch of the earth and ground the color scheme.
  • Plumeria pink: This soft pink is a classic Hawaiian color.

Hawaiian-Inspired Accents:

  • Ikat patterns: Incorporate these bold, geometric patterns in textiles like pillows and rugs.
  • Local Materials: Incorporate natural materials like wood, bamboo, and volcanic rock to add warmth and texture.
  • Seashell accents: Incorporate seashells of various sizes and colors into decorative bowls, as wall art, or as unique jewelry holders.
